Kentucky School for the Blind Opens Accessible Greenhouse

Blind and low-vision students in Louisville are growing pumpkins and tomatoes by touch in a new accessible greenhouse. The Kentucky School for the Blind in Louisville has opened a new greenhouse specifically for blind and low-vision learners. The facility was designed to support accessible learning, independence and career exploration for middle and high schoolers studying plant growth and sustainability. The project was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 7. The greenhouse was shaped around navigation by touch and features wide walkways, a tactile map and braille plant signage, three large tables where students work on projects. The floor is textured concrete, designed to avoid dirt and guide cane navigation, and drainage was positioned along the sides of the structure to keep walking paths clear. The science teacher, Laura Parker, said the greenhouse gives students direct, hands-on experience growing plants that could potentially become a recreational or leisure activity down the road.
