Milton Fire Department receives nearly $400K FEMA grant to recruit, retain firefighters
The four-year grant will help pay for gear, physicals, training and incentives as the volunteer department seeks to double its membership. The Milton Fire Department has received a $400,000 federal grant aimed at recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters. The funding comes as volunteer fire departments struggle to maintain staffing levels. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant will cover required physicals and new protective gear for recruits, and will support incentives for firefighters who respond to calls, attend training and complete certifications. The grant follows unsuccessful applications for similar federal funding for several years. The department hopes to double its current 22 members during the four-year grant period.
