First Ever Heart Health Guidelines For Women Unveiled
The American Heart Association and partners released guidelines redefining women's heart health across life stages. The guidelines aim to connect care and recognize cardiovascular risks earlier, addressing the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. The American Heart Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine have released the first-ever guidelines for women's heart health. The guidelines, which redefine heart health for girls and women, outline four distinct "Female Life Stages" that span from puberty through menopause and beyond. They aim to connect care across clinical specialties to ensure heart health is addressed holistically throughout a woman's life. The new approach views cardiovascular health as a lifelong process, focusing on biological transitions such as periods, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopur. The Guidelines also call for better research and evidence specific to women.
